FRANK
LLOYD WRIGHT
After
lightning struck his Spring Green campus, and destroyed
his home but left his studios untouched for a second time,
Frank Lloyd Wright declared “its
my home life that God dislikes, not my work”. This
is best understood as a comment on his unfortunate habit
of
running
off
with his clients’ wives; however the contrast with
his work shouldn’t be ignored either. His philosophical
approach to architecture and many “firsts” as
plate glass and steel superstructure gained greater currency
are inspiring.
I have enjoyed reading about him and visiting many of his
buildings.
His habit
of designing all aspects of the building down to its furnishings,
and his rather Druidic approach to mentoring both appeal
to me.
